The founder story
Why a retired firefighter wanted families to see more than a warning light
Henry Daniels’ experience shaped a simple idea: important home-safety information should be clear, visible and easy to understand at a glance.
Carbon monoxide is difficult to judge because there is nothing obvious to see or smell. That is exactly why Henry Daniels, a retired firefighter and the creator of Foreguard, believed home monitoring should give households clearer information rather than leaving them to interpret a single status light.
His idea became Foreguard: a plug-in monitor with a colour display intended to make everyday readings straightforward. It does not ask the homeowner to install wiring, climb a ladder or learn a complicated control panel.
The NHS says carbon monoxide is colourless and has no smell. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, tiredness, confusion and shortness of breath.
A number gives useful context
“PPM” means parts per million—the unit used to express the concentration of carbon monoxide in the air. Foreguard places that live reading on the front display alongside a clear gas-status indicator.
A display is not a substitute for responding to symptoms or an alarm, but it gives you more information than a light alone. That was central to Henry’s design brief: make the monitor easy to check without hiding important information behind an app.
A clear colour display brings the key readings together in one place.

“At 74, I wasn’t about to climb a ladder to install anything. With Foreguard, I didn’t have to—I just plugged it into the wall and my whole home was protected in under 5 minutes. It made me feel so proud and self-sufficient.”— Linda, 74 · Portsmouth
Home safety works best as a system
No carbon monoxide monitor should be treated as a replacement for properly installed and maintained appliances. The NHS recommends keeping heating and cooking appliances maintained and having boilers, heaters and cookers serviced regularly by a qualified, registered engineer.
Foreguard is designed to add clear, accessible information to that wider safety routine. A zero reading should never override symptoms, an alarm or professional advice.
“I bought one for myself and one for each of my adult kids to keep in their homes. Honestly, I can’t think of a better gift for the people you love—it says ‘I care about your safety’ without ever having to say ‘I worry about you.’”— Sarah H., 49 · Manchester
